At JOALI Maldives, art is more than an expression, it is a way of connecting with the natural world, inspiring curiosity and creating meaningful conversations around our relationship with the environment.
This July, the island welcomed back French multidisciplinary artist Aurélie Hoegy for a second creative residency, continuing her artistic journey with JOALI Maldives. Known for her poetic approach to sustainable craftsmanship, Aurélie previously brought her vision to the island through the creation of the iconic JOALI Hammock, a sculptural installation that celebrates connection, imagination and the beauty of handmade creations.
Working across weaving, sculpture, ceramics and storytelling, Aurélie transforms natural, recycled and reclaimed materials into artworks that invite audiences to see the world through a different perspective. Her practice explores the relationship between humans, nature and the overlooked beauty found in everyday materials, giving new life to objects while highlighting the importance of conscious creation.
During her latest residency, Aurélie invited guests of all ages to explore creativity through the lens of marine conservation, creating two immersive art experiences inspired by some of the Maldives’ most fascinating marine inhabitants: the whale shark and the jellyfish.
Through a monumental whale shark tapestry created from reclaimed materials and delicate ceramic jellyfish sculptures inspired by the rhythms of the ocean, guests were encouraged to look beyond perceptions of these often-misunderstood creatures and discover their beauty, resilience and essential role within the marine ecosystem.
One of the highlights of the residency was the creation of a monumental participatory tapestry inspired by the whale shark, one of the Maldives’ most iconic marine species and a gentle giant whose protection is vital to preserving the archipelago’s extraordinary biodiversity.
Created on a large communal loom, the tapestry brought together children and families in a shared creative experience. Each participant contributed a thread, a gesture and a story, gradually weaving together a collective artwork that reflects the interconnectedness of the ocean itself.
The tapestry was created using reclaimed fishing nets collected from neighbouring islands, marine debris recovered during beach clean-ups, and second-hand textiles donated by Maldivian resorts. Materials once discarded were transformed into a meaningful artwork, celebrating renewal, conscious craftsmanship and the beauty of giving new purpose to what was once overlooked.
Through the process, children were invited to discover the whale shark not as something to fear, but as a peaceful and awe-inspiring creature deserving of curiosity, empathy and protection. The artwork became a visual reminder of the delicate relationship between humans and the natural world, highlighting the importance of preserving the marine environments that surround the Maldives.
Aurélie’s second workshop invited guests to explore the delicate beauty of jellyfish through ceramics and textile craftsmanship.
Inspired by the graceful movement, translucent textures and otherworldly forms of Maldivian jellyfish, participants began by decorating handcrafted ceramic jellyfish sculptures. Through the mindful process of glazing, each creation took on its own personality, capturing the soft colours, flowing shapes and ethereal presence of these remarkable marine creatures.
The ceramic forms were then brought to life with flowing tentacles crafted from colourful yarns and threads, creating a collection of playful yet poetic jellyfish sculptures. Suspended together as part of an immersive installation, the artworks echoed the gentle movement of jellyfish drifting through ocean currents, transforming individual creations into a collective celebration of marine life.
Beyond their artistic beauty, the workshop encouraged guests to reconsider one of the ocean’s oldest and most misunderstood inhabitants. Often associated with fear, jellyfish play an important role within marine ecosystems, contributing to ocean biodiversity and reflecting the delicate balance of underwater environments.
Through ceramics, colour and storytelling, Aurélie transformed these overlooked creatures into symbols of resilience, adaptability and harmony, inviting participants to reconnect with the hidden wonders of the ocean.
At the heart of Aurélie Hoegy’s residency was a powerful message: transformation.
By pairing vulnerable marine species with reclaimed materials and traditional craft techniques, the residency demonstrated how both nature and overlooked objects can be viewed through a new perspective. From abandoned fishing nets transformed into a whale shark tapestry to ceramic jellyfish sculptures inspired by the rhythms of the ocean, each creation became a reminder of renewal, resilience and the beauty found in unexpected places.
Reflecting on the residency, Aurélie shared:
“I find it deeply meaningful to work with two marine creatures that often evoke fear or rejection, the whale shark and the jellyfish, while simultaneously transforming materials that have also been overlooked or discarded.
Through reclaimed fishing nets, abandoned marine equipment, second-hand textiles and other recovered materials, the creative process becomes an act of reconnection and transformation. What was once perceived as unwanted is given a new purpose and a new voice.
By creating artworks inspired by these animals, we are invited to shift our perception: to replace fear with curiosity, rejection with appreciation, and distance with connection. The creatures and the materials become symbols of resilience, renewal and coexistence. Together, they form a poetic dialogue between the ocean, ourselves and the natural world.”
Through experiences such as Aurélie Hoegy’s residency, JOALI Maldives continues to celebrate the transformative power of art-creating moments where creativity, environmental awareness and human connection come together to inspire lasting change.
From the JOALI Hammock to the whale shark tapestry and jellyfish sculptures, each creation reflects a shared belief that art can become a bridge between people and the natural world.
