Breathe Your Way To Wellbeing

“There is one way of breathing that is shameful and constricted. Then, there’s another way: a breath of love that takes you all the way to infinity.” ~ Rumi

Inhale… exhale…
Each breath we take is a gift — and an opportunity for healing, tranquillity and joy.

Breath is both science and miracle. The simple act of breathing offers a pathway to influence your thoughts and emotions, as well as bring about positive physical changes within the body.

Just breathe…

The term “breathwork” refers to various therapeutic breathing practices to elevate our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. The art of controlled breathing can improve our health in vital ways: by easing stress and anxiety, soothing chronic pain, improving focus, and unlocking fresh reserves of energy.

By anchoring us in the present moment, conscious breathing unlocks appreciation and gratitude. It also opens a door to spiritual growth, allowing us to access a higher state of consciousness and connection with the universe.

Breathwork therapies have existed for centuries in the East. From yoga to Tai Chi, each time-honoured practice offers unique methods of using breath for wellbeing. No matter where it comes from, however, the goal of any breathwork therapy is the same — to support the individual in achieving a greater sense of self-awareness and increasing their capacity for self-healing.

In recent years, the power of breathwork has come to the attention of wellbeing practitioners around the world, with some experts even calling it “the new yoga”. According to the Global Wellness Summit: “top medical schools agree that how we breathe has a profound impact on our physical and mental health”.

Indeed, breathing offers a powerful tool that can be accessed anytime, anywhere and by anyone. Sadly, in the hustle and bustle of the modern world, this essential part of life and wellbeing is often overlooked.

Five breathwork techniques

JOALI’s knowledgeable practitioners are delighted to share their favourite therapeutic breathing techniques with our community of readers.

  • Deep diaphragmatic breath (quiet breathing): Expanding the abdomen to fill the lower lobes of the lungs with renewed air
  • Deep thoracic breath: Expanding the chest to be able to take more air into the lungs.
  • Full yogic breath (deep diaphragmatic + thoracic breath): Abdominal breathing with chest breathing to utilise the entire capacity of the lungs.
  • Kapalbhati (fire breath): Active exhalations and passive inhalation to exercise the lungs to function better.
  • Nadi Shodhana: Alternate nostril breathing to improve the nervous system.

As a wise person once stated, deep breathing is like sending little love notes to yourself. So go ahead and take a deep breath…
